Don't worry about finding a Nec/Rng or Rng/Nec build online just come up with your own. Trial and error basically Plus it all depends on how you "want" to play. Don't worry whatever you build it'll work as long as your playing it according to how its built... ARGH I love that about this game. Anyhow just play around when BWE comes around on the 15th again. Plus its like a card game (yu-gi-oh, magic, duel masters) if your playing with someone elses deck you don't understand the full use of the deck as well unless that is you build your own deck according to how you want to play it. THEN it'll be a blast. Also don't be stupid on focusing on an attribute and not using it (i.e. putting 10 points in swordsmanship, but not using a sword or 10 points in domination magic, but you use only illusion and inspiration skills) things like that.

if they do some research that will eliminate much of the trial and error

since he was asking i thought he would like to avoid some of the guessing

I think a better phrase here might be "Re-inventing the wheel". It's a good idea to see what other people have done and get thier ideas on what works annd what doesn't, but on the other hand everyone's play style is different and a Warrior/Monk might be played one way for me and in a totally different direction for you. Therefore, trying one thing and then another is a good plan as well.

My advice is to strike a balance between the two. ^_^

Hehe, I never thought I'd see another Nec/R out there.
I'm currently level 15 (300xp of 16) and have been a Nec/R since the December BWE.

Tips:

Get a nice bow, 12-21 works well for me, and focus a lot of your attributes in marksmenship. For your Ranger powers, get Poison Arrows, Power Shot, Hunter's Shot, Charm Animal, Comfort Animal and Troll Ugnau.....yea. I forget how to spell it.
Your arrow spells will be your best bet for physical damage.

For Necro spells,
make sure you get a lot of Blood Magic spells. I personally recommend for a beginner:

Animate Bone Horror
Soul Feast
Parasitic Bond
Deathly Swarm
Life Siphon
Mark of Pain
Vile Touch
Vampiric Touch

The last two, be careful. You have to be up close to your target in order to use it, which puts you in melee range, which isn't good for a ranger. Armor, this is important because your worst enemy will be melee attacks. I suggest upgrading armor every new town if you can afford it. Infuse a rune into your armor once you get it high enough so your happy. I don't quite remember what mine is right now... I believe it's armor 45 or armor 40. I have a rune that upgrades my blood magic as well as my energy. Runes that give you a higher energy rating are good, because almost all of the damage you deal will be from spells. Anything that may improve your casting time will go good also.

I strongly suggest you use 5 Necro skills, 2 Ranger, and a signet. Signet of Ressurection is good in case your monk dies. I always carry with with me. For the record, at the start, you will die a lot. Once you become higher up, your skills will become more powerful and deal more damage. After you get up past level 10, focus on a lot of group damage, like Mark of Pain, etc.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Also, if you're interested, I'd love to have you in Eternal Knights guild. Good luck

Boo, Troll Unguent...

If you're looking for a PvE character, Troll Unguent is needed... but only if your team has no competant monk. My suggestion:

Play a mission with Troll Unguent with a party. If you're happy with the healing and you guys are going to do another mission, drop it and put something else in.

Troll Unguent has a 3 second cast time, which in PvP can really be waste, in my opinion.

Charm Animal.. again, another skill that should stay in your PvE line-up ONLY. Pets are not competitive. I love in the arena how as soon as a party wins and they have a pet, you hear the Ranger saying "omgz0rs my pet rox!"... but in reality, no, our party obviously was just terrible.

Animate Bone Horror? What? No. PvE Only. I heard of one good PvP build with minions, but they had no mobility... and they were already good players.

I'm not going to comment on the others. But here's what I like to run for an all around decent Ranger/Necro. It does well enough in the Tombs and in PvE.

Expertise: 11+2
Marksmanship: 10+2
Wilderness Survival: 6+1
Curses: 8

Poison Arrow
Hunter's Shot
Debilitating Shot
Read The Wind
Enfeeble (Or Enfeebling Blood)
Pin Down
Faintheartedness (Or Shadow of Fear)
Malaise

I chose Enfeeble over Enfeebling Blood mainly for the cast time and the energy cost. The Ranger (without a Zealous Bow String... one that gives energy on hit) is not *strapped* for energy, but you have to careful. A 10 Energy skill is really cutting you down. I leave my 10 energy spell for Faintheartedness or Shadow of Fear (I've been leaning towards SoF lately, due to Blackace's advice).

Rend Enchantments is a nice spell to run in PvP as well... but as was stated before, do your own trial runs.

Malaise and Debilitating Shot are geared towards PvP a bit more, when you're looking to shut individual casters down. They can be replaced with whatever you want... in PvE, it really doesn't matter. You can even run Deathly Swarm in PvE and get away with it... some people really like this spell... don't ask me why.

Poison Arrow could even be replaced with Barrage, a nice PvE and PvP skill. Probably one of the best Ranger skills, actually. Keep in mind, however, that Barrage cancels all your preperations, so you're getting no benefit from Read The Wind.

A nice skill to look at, however, if you're going to run Barrage, is Tiger's Fury. Putting Beast Mastery @ 4, gives you 6 or 7 seconds (can't remember off-hand) of increased attack speed. Running Tiger's Fury + Barrage is a nice combo.

I haven't touched on the Necromancer/Ranger... mostly because... well, if you're wanting to run a Ranger who uses bow skills, it'd be silly to have a Necro Primary.

I take troll when I'm playing in pick up groups as I normally am as I don't trust the monk. It has saved my arse more than once. Granted in a good group with a good monk it would be dropped for another skill.

That's mainly a PvP build as a lot of those skills don't work great in PvE where the strategy is more on high damage, so it gets tweaked a bit in PvE.

Yeah, if you don't know your group well, it's better to bring Troll Unguent along... and in reality, if you're just starting out or even if you've been playing a while, you probably won't find yourself a group you trust 100% of the time. So yeah, for PvE, it can almost be essential.

BTW, Aladdar, what'd you do this Beta Event? Were you around or were you too cool like Saus to show up?
